27 July 2026
In plain English
Quiet-ish Monday, one thing worth your attention. A major newspaper — the Washington Post — just ran an investigation into the boom in experimental drugs called peptides (short protein fragments people inject for recovery and longevity). It found states scrambling to protect consumers and big gaps in oversight of the med-spas and online sellers pushing them. Back in April we bet that a top newspaper or broadcaster would publish exactly this kind of safety exposé before spring 2027. The Post may have just done it eight months early, so our confidence jumped. It needs your eyes to confirm it counts. Everything else held steady: no new numbers yet on Medicare's new weight-loss-drug program, and Hims & Hers still hasn't announced a peptide product of its own. No new business to chase today.
Signal detail
HIMS rode the vote (+10% intraday July 23) and its CMO testified for reclassification, but the company remains silent on an actual peptide product. Live DTC competitors (Precision Peptide, PepScribe) prove the channel works pre-rulemaking. [Orrick](https://www.orrick.com/en/Insights/2026/07/FDA-Peptide-Compounding-Vote-What-to-Watch-at-the-July-PCAC-Meeting) confirms Category-1 legality is 12–18 months of notice-and-comment rulemaking away; Hims's launch-first-retreat pattern keeps a 2026 gray-zone launch live. Horizon Dec 31.
First-party Katalys this week: $600 payout / 3 conversions, 100% GLP-1 (Trim Rx, Embody), zero peptide DTC partners. With rulemaking 12–18mo out, no compliant peptide affiliate surface can exist in 2026. CPA math structural. New forecast candidate (operator approval required — not auto-added). The bpc157-pcac-2026 miss (resolved FALSE, Brier 0.49) taught that the advisory panel is not the regulator. The binding FDA question is now open and unforecast. Draft: "FDA does NOT publish a final rule adding any of the four July-2026 PCAC-recommended peptides (BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTs-c) to the 503A Category-1 Bulks List by 2027-12-31." Draft probability 0.75 (rulemaking 12–18mo+ from vote, FDA staff opposed all seven, agency not bound by the panel). Domain: peptides-longevity. This operationalizes the lesson: model the agency decision as a separate event with an FDA-staff-opposition prior.
Resolutions & upcoming
Two forecasts closed yesterday (2026-07-26): bpc157-pcac-2026 → FALSE (original 0.70 NOT-Cat-1, Brier 0.49 — the panel overrode its own staff 8-6-1) and pcac-july-multi-peptide → TRUE (original 0.55, Brier 0.2025 — the deliberate aggressive-reclassification revision paid). Nothing resolves in the next 14 days. peptide-safety-incident is flagged as a possible early resolution (see §2), pending operator judgment on the WaPo piece.
How Barque got smarter today
- Peptides-longevity domain Brier is drifting. The two July-26 resolutions average 0.346 (0.49 + 0.2025), above the 0.25 miscalibration line. The drift is concentrated in one error — conflating advisory panel with regulator — and the proposed §2 binding-rulemaking forecast is the corrective. Watch the domain average as new peptide forecasts open.
- The winning revision and the losing hold came from the same session. pcac-july-multi-peptide (revised up on trajectory) beat bpc157 (held on institutional base rate) by 0.29 Brier. Reinforces the resolutions-log heuristic: when a trajectory signal contradicts a standing institutional prior, weight the trajectory.
- Source-pack was stale today (dated 07-26, firehose 0 matches) — web-search did the verifying rather than the pack. Not a failure, but a note: if the 04:00 aggregation and firehose listener keep coming up empty, the proprietary-edge premise erodes. Flag for operator infra check.
- Augur: no genuine augury today. The pet-GLP-1 scan (CNBC/ABC) surfaced nothing past the MEOW-1-2027 timeline already work-ordered. Honest quiet.
